A Bear With His Dinner
When we lived in Dillingham, we always had problems with bear during fishing season. They were hungry for their favorite food, so we had to catch, and process immediately before they innocently took their share from us.

First Landing
Watching the baby eagles grow up behind our house in Homer has been very exciting. They practice flying first by jumping up in the nest and flapping, then flying across their nest for days before trying to leave the nest for flight and/or another branch in their tree. The parents are so confident as the baby learns the tricks of flying and hunting. Erik definitely caught the innocence and fright of the baby in this piece of art.

We have several types but recently we have had mostly Short-eared Owls, Northern Hawk Owl and in 2012,Great Horned owls because the rabbit population was so high.

Shedding Musk Ox
We decided Erik needed to draw a muskox as we planned his portfolio but he had never seen them in the wild during our years in the bush. I took him to the Alaska Zoo where they had a very grumpy bull muskox that looked a mess with clumps of stringy quiviut hanging off his body. I found that the zoo keepers didn’t clean or comb him because of his frightening behaviors. Erik and I took a roll of film of the muskox that day and had them developed. When we returned home, I gave him the pictures and he drew this adorable muskox.

The Big Eagle
The first picture Erik drew independently was The Big Eagle. After he drew the black line of the bird, I was shocked at the skill. I asked my teacher aide if she had drawn it and she said “No way. He did it after he saw this picture. “She showed me a picture of an Eagle sitting in a tree with his feet hidden by the branches. “Look, he even drew the feet!” she said excitedly.

The Loon In The Lake was one of Erik’s first pieces in 1997. I love the “spiderwebbing” in the back ground and lake. We were all learning how to help Erik at this time and with this piece, we learned we couldn’t give him any suggestions on color choice.

The Moose was one of Erik’s first art pieces, drawn in Kenny Lake in 1997 in my classroom. Erik has always been interested in these big lumbering animals as they eat the brush and bushes around our house. We often stop and talk to them as they wander near us, though we always make sure to have a big tree nearby to get behind if the giants decide to charge us.
