This picture of a caribou eating was completed in 2006 and illustrates his early abstract work. When Erik lived in South Naknek as a child, the caribou roamed so close that his mother had to honk the horn to avoid hitting them when driving  slowly across the tundra and sea-ice to go shopping in Naknek. The caribou were scratching the snow to get to the tundra to eat.

Eagles in Homer are so common that we can see them almost every hour of the day from our house on the beach. Erik has enjoyed drawing them. This is an abstract transition piece. Part is simple one line and part of the feathers are double lines.

A Puffin, is one of Erik’s latest pierces of art.  It is much more abstract than his earlier Puffin done in 1998 and yet you can tell exactly what kind of bird he is thinking about.

This is a common scene in Homer where the mama moose come to have their babies in spring. We rarely see bulls in our area of Alaska.

Flying Family – Homer is on the migration route for all the swans, craines, ducks, geese and other migrant birds in spring and fall.  In the spring the flocks glide in and eat on the beach when they arrive.  In the fall theducks and craines practice teaching their young how to fly in groups of about 100-150 birds.  A flock that is teaching is so noisy they wake us up at night as they practice their manuvers over our house.  We know when they are about to leave because they fly almost completely silent when taking off and landing.

We have seen several foxes when traveling to do art shows. Erik likes to spot them and point them out to me as we drive. Their curiosity has always been interesting to him.

Dogs in the back of a truck are a common scene in Homer. This dog in the truck bed is the only important thing to Erik, he didn’t even look at the rest of the truck. His dogs are becoming more and more abstract as he gets older.

Erik’s aunt lives in San Diego by the zoo. He loves to go see them close up in their enclosure. We go so he can sit and draw the animals if he wants or we take pictures for him to possibly work on during the long winters in Alaska.

Dogs love Erik as much as he loves them.  We don’t own a dog any longer  because he doesn’t like them when they bark or step on his art.  Whenever we go visit friends with dogs, he gets right on the floor for a little mutual admiration.

The moose around our house are always eating our trees, especially in deep snow years. He won 1st place in a national art show in Kansas City for this piece.

Shorebirds in Homer arrive in April and May each spring. They come in large flocks and cover the beaches as they poke their tiny heads in the water and sand insearch of food to eat. The large flocks are dispursed across the state by June.

Walrus in Alaska are interesting animals.  They are commonly found at Round Island near Togiak in Bristol Bay. Painted in 2010.
